Electromagnetic Spectrum in the Chemistry Classroom

My chemistry students need a grating spectroscope.

Mr. Parker Auburn High School
Rockford, IL Grades 9-12

I would like a grating spectroscope for my chemistry classroom. I teach chemistry and advanced placement chemistry to 10th, 11th, and 12th graders in the gifted academy in an urban district in Illinois.

My students really like the unit on electromagnetic radiation. The problem we face is that our spectroscopes are not very precise. We would like to measure the frequency of the spectrum in a precise fashion, and a grating spectroscope would allow us to do this task.

A grating spectroscope is an instrument that takes precise mathematical measurements of the electromagnetic spectrum. The students then can apply mathematics to their science laboratory reports. A precise instrument such as this will allow the students to study the spectrum in a mathematical manner. They presently are not able to do so with the current spectroscopes that we have.

Your help will ensure that my students have access to equipment that will make their laboratory work more meaningful. With your help my students will be able to study the electromagnetic spectrum using an instrument that precisely measures the radiation emitted.
