My students need an iPad charging cart so they can use the iPads in geometry to do interactive math, create games/apps in web design, and create videos on building drones.
My students attend one of the most diversified and highly ranked academic high schools in a major metropolitan area of Jersey City, New Jersey. These students represent the very best of Jersey City schools and many come from socio-economically challenged backgrounds and neighborhoods. Despite the many adversities faced by our students, they thrive in our rigorous academic setting at McNair Academic High School. Even though we are ranked highly in the state of NJ, we do not receive adequate funding from the local or state governments for the classroom supplies and technology needed to stimulate their mathematical minds. My students are enrolled in Honors Geometry, Web Design, and UAV Technology; subjects that are challenging and necessary for success in STEM careers. My students are always ready for the challenge and have met all the rigorous common core/PARCC guidelines. It is my hope that with the help of some added technological supplies, it will help to engage my students and further deepen their conceptual understanding in mathematics, computer science and UAV technology.
My Project
Having a iPad charging cart will enable my students to be able to utilize the iPads in my classroom for different learning structures in Geometry, Web Design and UAV Technology. Having charged iPads will enable my Geometry students to use iPads to do hands on interactive math lessons, which will deepen their conceptual understanding on hard to visualize Geometrical concepts. I could download apps for various mathematical practice skills, which would allow me to have visual hands on activities to challenge my highest performing students and assist my struggling students.
Students will also be able to utilize the ipads in Web Design to create their own interactive games, apps and websites.
In UAV class, students will be able to utilize the charged iPads to record/video their progress and process in assembling/building/flying their different drone projects, as well as update the class UAV website. Students could take pictures of their progress at different time intervals in the project building process and record their engineering observations through a visual medium. This will provide future students with visual tools to enable them to successfully build their own drone projects. Students will be able collaborate on group findings by sharing their STEM/UAV experiences on the cloud.
My project will make a big difference in my students learning environment, because as you know, young people love to use technology and need to be visually engaged. Currently, I have no way to charge the classroom iPads in a safe and secure manner. If you could assist me to help digitally engage my students, it would be very much appreciated. Jersey City has many budgetary problems, and this grant will help to close that budgetary gap.
