I have 3 science classes that love learning through a hands-on approach! They come in daily asking if we are doing a lab. I would love for them to be able to explore electricity by creating their own working circuits!
I have about 75 science students this year.
They are 5th graders performing in a middle school setting, and they have really embraced having science class every day and collaborating as lab groups. Our district is very small, and teachers really get to know all students. Students have the opportunity to really show what they are interested in, and I hope they can really pursue their science interests this year!
My Project
My students need 10 electricity discovery kits and a magnet kit. Students will be able to create real working parallel and series circuits. What a great way to "see" electricity at work. They can do this in an inquiry fashion where they decide how to make the circuit and find out what works and what does not. They will be able to manipulate the magnets, to see magnetic fields, and feel the attraction and repulsion of the magnets. They can also create electromagnets to realize the connection between the two topics!
Having these kits available to my students would increase understanding in a field that is otherwise invisible.
Without materials, students have to visualize electricity flowing through objects. With these kits, they can use inquiry to actually achieve a working circuit by trial and error and take ownership of their learning!
