My Students
My 40+ students are English Language Learners from diverse and low economic background. They range from ages 6- 11 and grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. They are eager to learn not only the academic content but also about the culture. About 82% of the school's population is Hispanic. We are situated in a high poverty area in the city of Oklahoma. W. Elementary is a Title one inner city school. Nearly all students are from low-income households, everyone in our school is on free or reduced lunch. Most of my students do not have access to a computer or tablet at home. Their families rely on the technology we have at school. Unfortunately, we don't have enough technology in our building to support our student's learning and prepare them for the future.
My Project
Pencils are an essential part of a day in a student's life. With roughly 50 students we go through lots of pencils and erasers in a month. These pencils need to be sharpened multiple times a day to serve their purpose.
We need a working pencil sharpener in our classroom.
We have one that makes lots of noise and doesn't get the job done. It is also a big distraction in the classroom when one of my students needs to sharpen his/her pencil. My students would be very excited to get a new working pencil sharpener. My students need sharp pencils for their everyday work.
