Physics is a UC/CSU approved lab course with lots of hands-on learning. Students use various pieces of equipment to complete labs and projects. Physics is open to all grades, it is mostly juniors and seniors.
Due to recent state budget cuts, we find it increasingly difficult to fund our courses and traditional projects. Popular projects and labs are in danger of being cut due to funding and are often our best way of advertising for the course. Increases in class sizes and sections offered as well as introducing new teachers to our department is stretching our materials even further. We have taken several steps to try to bring more materials and equipment into our classrooms but still find ourselves short.
This project is new to our class and we are without materials for it. In order to learn more about parallel and series circuits, students will wire up miniature houses. They will be using cardboard and other materials to create four rooms each with their own wiring specifications. Students will learn to apply their knowledge of electricity to the more complex wiring of a house. These batteries will provide a safe and stable flow of electricity into their projects.
The lights and wiring have been provided by other donors. The structure of the house will be made of cardboard and other materials that students will be able to find easily. The only thing left that can be a financial hardship to students is the 9 V battery to wire it. This project has great potential for students to think critically and apply their knowledge. By working with groups, students will be able to reinforce the knowledge they already have and to work together to learn how to solve the problems within this project. I am very excited about the possibilities of this project, as long as I can make it work!
