My students are from a rural, poverty-stricken town in central West Virginia. Many are being raised by grandparents due to drug addiction in the community. Others are in foster care. Many are below grade level in reading. Due to their deficiencies in reading, many also struggle in other academic areas.
Although they seem to have it rough, they live life to the fullest.
They are happy, energetic, loving and love to read. They always try their hardest and want to do their best.
My Project
Voting is an important duty of every citizen. Sadly, many in the community that I live in do not exercise their right to vote. So I, as a teacher, would like to change that in the future. What better way to start than to start when they are young?
I have always considered my class very democratic.
We vote on everything from whether we should play inside or outside at recess to what learning activity should we do next.
I want my students to know how elections are run and why everyone should go out and vote. Hopefully, this will get them excited about the upcoming election and they will ask their parents to take them out to see their ballets cast.
The way that I plan on getting students excited about elections is through reading lots of fun age appropriate books. I would also like to show them a Schoolhouse Rock video about elections. And most importantly, I want to have a classroom election of our own. Students could run for president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. They will have campaigns with posters and even debates. What better way to learn about elections than by "doing?"
In conclusion, please help my students get excited about the upcoming election through books, videos, and having campaigns of their own. We may even succeed in getting many parents that normally wouldn't out to vote with their child.
