Help us get a comfortable spot for learning! As a first grade teacher small group instruction is essential to the success of my students. Without a table to work on, this kind of instruction becomes much more difficult.
My students are eager, high achieving, first graders from a high poverty charter school in Indiana.
They come from very diverse backgrounds, but consistently preform above grade level on national standardized tests. Their hard work and continued success has helped our school maintain an "A" rating.
My Project
As a first grade teacher, small group instruction is a part of my daily life. Whether it is writing, reading, or math time, it seems that there is hardly a moment in the day when I do not have a small group of one kind or another working in a tucked away corner of my classroom. We used to have a table that we used for this very purpose, but sometime last year, one of the legs broke off and there has been no money in the budget to replace it. As a result, I have had to get creative in finding other places in which to teach my students. Receiving a kidney shaped table from the generous donors on DonorsChoose would get my students off of the floor, and working at a table during some of their most important instruction of the day.
A kidney shaped table would enhance the learning of my students because its shape gives equal access to each person at the table.
With a kidney table it becomes easier to help individuals while still maintaining focus on the others sitting around the table. When you are at a set of desks, on the floor, or even sitting at a rectangular table, you do not have the kind of access to all students that a kidney shaped table provides. It would be an invaluable addition to our classroom.
