Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all different backgrounds, yet melt together at school to make the neatest student population. We have multiple languages spoken at school and all our kids work together to make sure everyone is on the same page and nobody falls behind. One of the easiest places our newcomer students can fit in is music. Music is a universal language and offers comfort to students who may be struggling to adjust to a new school or language.
Our school has a thriving music program, but not enough instruments to go around!
With over four hundred students and our rapid growth, our young school has grown faster than the music inventory. If we were able to acquire some more instruments we could give students a real music experience that they are sure to love!
My Project
Help us get new books for our music classroom! Music is a great place to incorporate reading and writing in an organic and fun way for the students. We love books that have songs lyrics for words and pictures to help illustrate the songs story! These books really help our young students with visualizing what they are singing about, and working with song sequence.
The GIA publication books by John Fierabend go hand in hand with the curriculum our Kindergarten and 1st graders are following.
Books like Father Grumble, Kitty Alone, and Derby Ram, and There Was a Man and He Was Mad are illistrated versions of song tales that we teach our students throughout their elementary school career. They help the students visualize the words they are singing. This helps us make our music classroom cross curricular, which is a school wide goal.
The recorder books (Disney, Star Wars, Essential Elements, Harry Potter, and Teach Yourself the Easy Way) will be used primarily by the 4th and 5th graders as we begin learning recorder during the Spring Semester. This is an excellent way to help get them ready for band and orchestra when they enter middle school.
Lastly, our 5 programs included (Getting Down with Momma Goose, Aesop Fables, Music of Our Roots, Taking Flight, and It's a Hit) will be used during performances that our students make. These performances are televised locally so we like to make sure we used the best resources.
These books would be used very often in our classroom and would be in the hands of hundreds of students!
