Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at Northwest Classen high school within Oklahoma City Public Schools. It was built in 1955 to accommodate the growing population in the northwest corridor of Oklahoma City. Over 86% of the student body is from a minority with 54% being hispanic. Many of my students are newcomers to the United States and in Sheltered English Learner classrooms to help them develop basic language and content skills.
1 in 3 students at Northwest Classen are considered as EL students, these students come from various cultural backgrounds and life experiences.
My students are very eager to learn and have so much excitement to be in the United States. My classes of Personal Financial Literacy focus on learning real world material: Applying for a job, paying taxes, bank accounts, etc.
My Project
All students in Oklahoma must pass Personal Financial Literacy as a graduation requirement. But for freshman students and English learner students, the concepts can be too abstract.
Real world skills learned through fun and games.
Board games play a crucial role in student development and growth, as they help acquire logical and reasoning skills, boost critical thinking and gain spatial reasoning. Playing board games helps with learning, social and communication skills as well. The board games I am requesting specifically deal with financial skills and applications.
I am also requesting some financial literacy books in Spanish for newcomer students to read and have context to the terms and content that we are discussing in the Personal Financial Literacy classes.
