Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember standing in front of the White House for the first time on my eighth grade trip. It was life-changing for me to visit our Nation's Capital, the White House, and to see our government in action! As a teacher, I want to make this same dream happen for my eighth grade students!
These are 21 diverse, fabulous, unique, inspiring, fun-loving, close-knit students.
They attend a charter school in California. They are the only class of eighth graders at our small school. Some have attended class together since fourth grade, when the school first opened. They have supportive families, who value education, but many cannot afford to fund such a large expense such as sending their child all the way to the east coast for our trip. A large majority of our students have parents who are on welfare or are struggling to make ends meet. One parent, in particular, has been on the verge of homelessness but will do whatever it takes to have her child attend our school every day.
My Project
Because of the donations, these 21 students will be able to travel all the way across the United States, for some a first plane ride, to visit our Nation's Capital, the White House, the Liberty Bell, and the location where our first government was conceived. They will be able to enrich their lives by touching, seeing, and visiting, firsthand, what they've only been able to read in books and see Ondine.
They can use this knowledge to become more responsible, civic young citizens in their future adult lives. This trip will be a life-changing event for my students, many of whom are interested in pursuing politics as a career but have never had the opportunity to see it in action as they will by attending this trip. They will become more valuable people because of the events they will witness, the monuments they will see, and the relationships they will strengthen by traveling together.
This group of eighth graders are particularly special to me.
I have watched them grow and have had the pleasure of teaching them history for the past four years. These wonderful kids deserve the opportunity to see, firsthand, what they have learned about all of these years. For some, they may never have been able to afford an opportunity like this. My hope is that this trip will inspire them to pursue their dreams. For everyone, this will be a trip they will never forget!
