Eighth Grade Scholarships to Oregon Shakespeare Festival
The cost of scholarships for seven students so that they can attend the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is $358, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
As culmination of their elementary school education, the eighth grade students of Sonoma Charter School will spend four days at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, this coming June. Besides attending plays, the students will participate in theater and music classes. This trip becomes both a finale for their Language Arts and Performing Arts programs, and a celebration of the completion of junior high school.
We hold several fund raising activities to help finance this outing, to help in making it affordable to all the students. After fund-raising, the trip will still cost each student some money to cover the expenses of room, board, classes, plays, and to help in off-setting the cost of gas and mileage for the parent drivers who will be providing transportation. Seven of our students qualify for additional financial aid, in the form of scholarships. We are determined to make this experience available to all our students, and will be deeply grateful for help from DonorsChoose in providing these scholarships, ensuring that all our students will be able to participate in this rewarding experience.
Sonoma Charter School is a public school located in the northern part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Besides working to provide a solid academic curriculum, responsive to the varying needs of its increasingly diverse population, the school has maintained an especially strong Arts program. This year's eighth graders will produce "A Midsummer Night's Dream" before attending the Ashland Shakespeare Festival in June, and will have studied, in my English class with them, the three plays we are to see in Ashland: Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor," "The Diary of Anne Frank," and Edmond Rostand's "Cyrano de Bergerac."
Many alumni of Sonoma Charter School name the Oregon Shakespeare Festival field trip as the highlight of their elementary school years. We hope to continue this worthwhile end-of-Junior-High-School tradition at our school, and appreciate any help in providing the scholarships needed to continue this program, with all our students included.
