Eight Is Too Many!

My students need 2 round tables to replace one very large old table.

My Students

We love being together but many times eight 6-year-old bodies at one table is just too many! We need a little more personal space to work and wiggle.

I teach first grade in a small school that houses four first grade classes and four pre-kindergarten classes.

My class is made up of eighteen energetic students who come from a wide variety of life experiences. We call ourselves the Busy Bees and indeed we are very busy. We learn and work together as a whole group, independently, and in small groups.

My Project

Last summer when I moved to this school district, I inherited a first grade classroom that hadn't been used for a couple of years. Unfortunately, much of the furniture had been taken to other rooms so my classroom was lacking essential furniture. What I did have was very old, worn, and stained (My desk chair is older than this middle-aged teacher!). As is the case in many economically challenged small school districts, there was no money available to purchase large items such as tables or chairs. With a lot of searching, I was able to pull together a classroom equipped with 2 large eight-person tables and 2 smaller round tables. I was also able to borrow a kidney shaped table but will have to return it at the end of this school year!

We would love to have two smaller round tables (and someday, one smaller rectangular table to use for a listening station) so that the eight bodies all cramped together at one large table could spread out.

This would help us develop our sense of personal space and learn to work more effectively in small groups. With eight of us sitting at one table there is no personal space to work and wiggle!
