Do you remember the first time, history came alive for you? I'm sure it wasn't with a worksheet or coloring page. That is what I hope will happen for my students. Students will explore ancient Egypt with hands-on activities such as building pyramids, mummifying chickens and making Egyptian masks.
I have a class of 19 diverse second graders.
I have 12 boys and 7 girls and giving them an opportunity to explore their interest is essential. My children are inquisitive and have an innate desire to learn. They are energetic, unique and have a variety of talents. Every student possesses the ability to think critically, learn and understand information, and solve complex problems. My children come from all over Washington, DC with a diverse set of needs but one thing they all have in common is that they have a true thirst for knowledge.
My Project
As we learn about ancient Egypt, students will build an Egyptian city. I am requesting art materials such as clay, metallic pens, jewels, foam boards and sand paper so that students can build a miniature 3-D Egyptian city. Students will also make mask, canopic jars, mummify chickens and bury them in student created sarcophagi and tombs. This is a hands on, art integrated investigation into ancient Egypt.
The old Chinese proverb says, "I hear...I forget, I see...I remember...I do, I understand." I hope that by "doing"my students will retain and understand more of their learning about ancient Egypt.
We learn a lot from history and I want my students to know the contributions of those that came before them as they use this knowledge to change the world around them.
