Help me give my students the experience of hatching chicks! We will need a HovaBator Advanced Egg Incubator Combo Kit so that my students can observe and document the 21-day incubation and a cage for the chicks.
My kiddos are singers! Every child enjoys a song or two, but my class bursts into song upon each of my directions. "Good morning scholars! Come in and wipe your feet please." I say as we enter our warm classroom in the Sierra Nevada foothills. And their bright faces will break out into some song involving "stomp and swish and wipe and hello". It's a little different every day, but it always starts small with a few small voices and then grows to the whole group. On the way to our first field trip, the bus driver and I kept marveling as my littles sang song after song for over an hour. My students are so exceptional because not only have they created a choir of their own, but there's no ring leader. Each song is started by a new kid, even my shy ones grab onto some vocabulary or math lesson and begin their own song.
The truly astonishing thing about my students is that 90% of them live below the poverty line and they turn learning into a musical anyway!
Their circumstances have not diminished their curiosity or enthusiasm for learning.
My Project
This project will teach life science across all aspects of the curriculum to all ability levels. Students will practice phonics and reading skills in small groups, reading all about animals that hatch from eggs. They will track and graph the incubation progress of our eggs. Above all, we will practice curiosity and questioning in their science journals each day. Once the chicks are hatched we will donate them to a local organic farm whose owner helps run our school garden.
The majority of our students have limited/ uncertain housing, so the greatest benefit will be the stewardship and security they will be able to provide for another living thing.
We have five students who have experienced extreme trauma and have daily behavior plans to support their ability to learn in our classroom environment. Making scientific study engaging will teach all our students responsibility and respect for all creatures. Being part of the process of creating life teaches not only core content but appreciation for all life's place in nature.
