Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are truly amazing! I am so fortunate to teach scholars who come from a vast variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. My students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Thai, Sinhalese, Chinese, Urdu and Arabic. Watching them learn and grow each day is absolutely wonderful. With over seventy percent of students in our school receiving free lunch, I work hard to provide a learning environment filled with safety, comfort and a rich educational experience for each and every child.
My students are as diverse in their academics as they are in their backgrounds.
I am constantly searching for ways to better my own teaching and thereby, my scholars' learning as we work vigorously together to meet the rigorous standards set forth by the Common Core.
My Project
As my fifth grade students prepare for middle school, organization is as important as curriculum. My students are in need of supplies to help them stay organized and protect their amazing work.
Folders, pencils, chart paper, sentence strips and laminating pouches help us create, organize and protect all of our hard work.
It is very important that if I create something in chart form, I also provide my students with a copy to keep in their folder so they can have access to this tool when they are not in the classroom and working hard. Folders are used for each sub-component of ELA and we create new folders each time we begin a new unit. Additionally, we use our folders for portfolio purposes. With over sixty students, this is a lot of folders per year! We need places to safely preserve all of our hard work! We use our chart paper and markers to record information we want to save and reference repeatedly. We laminate our best work as well as rubrics and models to protect these important pieces. Finally, we need tons of pencils for all of the wonderful writing we do!
