Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a Special Education teacher in Richmond Hill, our amazing students come from every walk of life. Our wonderful community is filled with hard-working families that support our school system as best they can with limited resources. Our population is largely military and transient.
I don't think of my students as special needs; I prefer limited edition!
We have a considerable population that includes disabilities ranging from autism, hearing impairments, learning differences, emotional disturbances, and intellectual difficulties, among others. We also have a considerable group of students that are learning English as their second language.
My Project
Word study is an implicit, analytical approach to instruction. Many of our learners require more explicit instruction for both encoding and decoding. Word study joins nicely with the progression of skills in explicit and synthetic phonics approaches, including Orton-Gillingham. Students need the opportunity to think critically and manipulate words and their concepts. That way they can generalize words based on spelling or other commonalities. Grasping spelling, word recognition, and vocabulary goes beyond memorizing a few rules.
The best way to become proficient in words and their features is to have plenty of opportunities to examine words in different contexts.
Through hands-on manipulation and resources like Orton-Gillingham multisensory phonics games, my hope is that our learners will examine how words work and be on their way to becoming fully literate boys and girls.
