Our elementary school is a rural and low-income public school built back in 1902. The majority of the students who attend our school are English Language Learners and qualify for free breakfast and free lunch meals. We have a vast majority of students coming from migrant working families. Mecca is situated in an unincorporated area surrounded by agricultural fields of dates, lemons, bell peppers, grapes, artichokes, and carrots.
Flexible seating options are a perfect match for a student that have different preferences, various levels of energy, and different learning styles.
The brain-friendly learning spaces of flexible seating has maximized choices and created a sense of a strong classroom community that nurtures academic, social, and emotional learning. It also further develop self-motivated scholars who is respectful for oneself and others. My students also gain a deeper understanding of their own learning capabilities.
Last year, students in my ASES Writing Class (an after school program) also benefit from my Flexible Seating arrangement. My students were extremely excited and eager to learn and yet sad to see the year end.
Dr. Merritt (2014) uses a theory that includes a neural processes of receiving, modifying, and integrating sensory input and the resulting output which is adaptive behavior. Therefore, a child’s attention could be improved by physical stimulation within the classroom.
Flexible seating is linked to higher academic performance, better health, increased metabolism, improve core strength and posture, and improved motivation and engagement for eager and successful scholars.
Flexible seating also creates the sense of ownership of their space and a whole mind-body connection.
It motivates and help young children who have attention and focus problems. Movement is a good thing! Flexible seats allows students to change their posture throughout the day which will increase blood flow and will help reduce fatigue due to sitting in a rigid hard chair all day long. It promotes concentration and alertness because it provides each student a seating preference of their choice; in fact, adults also exercise different seating options when choosing a preferred airline seat, buying a concert ticket or a cup of coffee, or making a restaurant reservation.
An advantage to flexible seating is the option of providing a designated “Smart Spot” which is essential for a child. A place where a child can go to do their best work! By providing each student different options of seating that best fits their learning style, students will feel more relax and comfortable in his/her desired seat or preferred area of the classroom.
I have enormous amount of hope and confidence that your donation will allow my students and I to take full advantage of all the marvelous benefits Flexible Seating. It will provide and strengthen students experience in a student-centered learning environment.
