Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“EEEK – it’s a bug!” is a declaration of disgust. “EEEW – it’s a spider!” is an admission of anxiety. By harnessing a kindergartner’s innate curiosity of her or his world, though, I hope to transform those EEEKs and those EEEWs to COOLs and AWESOMEs. “COOL – it’s an insect!” and “AWESOME – it’s an arachnid!” are the pronouncements that will be made by my 20 eager kindergarten scientists with your support of this proposal.
I am a kindergarten teacher who is excited about inquiry-based learning. I would like for my students to become inquirers, investigators, and scientific discovery-makers. That is, what I would like for my kindergartners is that they continue to be full of questions and awe and excitement about their surroundings by providing them with an opportunity to explore their world more closely. I would like to acquire a set of prepared insect slides for use with our classroom big screen microscope as well as an insect, scorpion and spider, and sea life specimen set for my students to use as observation tools as we begin to make inquiries into the structures of these fascinating – although at first, frightening – little animals.
The variety of animals being requested will allow for the development of inquiring minds that can devise intelligent questions through direct, up-close observation in a manner that inspires wonderment rather fear. Moreover, this form of observation fosters critical thinking skills as children search for commonalities between the different specimens and then discuss the differences they note. Finally – and quite importantly from a kindergarten perspective – making safe observations of these sometimes scary creatures can be great fun as the extent of one’s own curiosity drives the pace of one’s own investigations!
Help replace EEEW with AWESOME. Please consider supporting this proposal to bring the excitement of safe scientific observation to my young inquirers.
Thank you!
