Our school includes a large variety of students from various countries all over the world. One hundred percent of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and we are a school-wide recipient of Title I funds.
One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing the change that my students undergo over the course of the year.
I am fortunate enough to see kids develop ways to express kindness each and every day. They use manners that weren't present in August. I have seen students who loathed reading turn into book lovers. A great part is hearing students say that math is their favorite subject because that was not true for me as a child.
My classroom is full of faces and personalities that will impact our future world. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to do everything I can to make sure that impact will be a positive impact.
My Project
Throughout the school year, my students have personalized goals. Social / behavioral goals, math goals, reading goals, writing goals... we are very goal focused. These goals are personalized and focused on growth, not necessarily achievement. This ensures that ALL students have goals within reach and with hard work and effort are capable of meeting them. At the end of the school year, a celebration is in order! Any student who met their reading or math goal will be invited to our "Goal Gala." Math goals are focused on computations, mixed operations, and fact fluency. Reading goals involve reading speed, accuracy, expression, and retelling of what they have read.
Each spring, we celebrate the academic growth and successes with a fancy lunch involving spaghetti, salad, bread, desserts, and some bubbly grape juice - followed by a toast!
My teammates and I want our kids to see with hard work, fun will come. Usually, however, the work must come first. This is a fun and celebratory time that is enjoyed by everyone. With increasing needs of school supplies for students and curriculum needs that aren't provided, DonorsChoose.org would be a wonderful and appreciated help while putting on this special lunch for the kids!
