Most second graders are learning to read, or learning to read better, love school, and are eager to learn new things. They especially like it when they get to choose what they read, write about, or to pick an interesting independent learning activity during workshop time.
My classroom rule is to always be a little more kind than necessary.
This class is racially, ethnically, and religiously diverse in a Title I school, over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunch. Second graders are still sweet, kind, and always happy to help. The "s" word is shut up or stupid, and they are just as likely to tattle on themselves as someone else.
My Project
Small group instruction is great for differentiating for students with different learning needs, but what are the rest of the students while I'm working with a small group? The other students need to be working independently. In second grade this is not easy, many students have just learned to read and still need a lot of support to work independently.
My students love to use Lakeshore Learning activities during the workshop!
These activities focus on building academic vocabulary and reading comprehension in fun ways. They are independent and self-checking, so with little assistance from me, students can be learning while I am working with a small group.
