My job, as a teacher, is to give my students the tools they need to make progress on their educational goals. When I can give them engaging activities, they are active learners. My students are in a self-contained middle school special education classroom for students with a variety of disabilities that make it difficult for them to access their grade level academics. Each child has an individual education plan to help them make progress on goals in academics, social skills, communication and functional life skills. About 1/3 of my students speak English as a second language and every student works significantly below their grade level in all academic areas.
My students are very hard workers and try their best to grow and learn in every subject.
They are full of curiosity, energy and incredible potential. We try to always focus on the positive and celebrate every success that our students achieve. Every day we do our best to make sure that our students have the necessary tools they need to succeed, but it's not easy when you have a small classroom budget per year in a high poverty school.
My Project
My students love learning through play! It is so much more fun to practice your skills while playing a game than while completing a worksheet. They are engaging in turn-taking, discussion, and actively using learned skills. It is so fulfilling to see them interact with each other and take charge of their own learning! The discussions that are sparked as they discuss strategies and answers is so enlightening to see as a teacher.
My classroom is a very hands-on classroom and I like to give them the opportunity to have fun while they are learning, especially in regards to really challenging concepts!
I am requesting interactive learning games in math and reading. These games and activities can be used during literacy and math centers, before school, and for free choice. These materials will help students master the basic literacy and math concepts that are critical to their success. They will also develop a love of learning that will give them a firm foundation in school and lead to a bright future!
