Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of twenty-four first-grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime in the nation. All students at my school site receive a free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation Americans. School is one of the only places in which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.
Living and attending school in a highly impoverished urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.
Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.
My Project
These rainy days have taught me that my students do not have enough activities to engage on during recess when its raining, and they have to stay indoors. This is why I am requesting sets of educational board games. The games that I am requesting put into practice math skills, speaking skills, and strategizing. When playing most of the games students will practice basic math skills, specially when using dominoes and "Chutes and Ladders" With many other games, students get to have speaking interactions with one another, like in "Guess Who?" students practice speaking by asking particular questions. Using chess and checkers students will practice strategizing.
