Education to Empower: Learning Academic Language for College

My students need books such as a set of 20 "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria" , 5 copies of "Colleges That Change Lives" and 3 others that set an academic foundation for our class conversations about inequity in their own lives.

My Students

My high school students are undertaking one of the biggest challenges of their educational career thus far: the decision to continue at college and how to make it happen.

I have the best students in the world!

They are sweet, funny and kind. Sometimes they don't believe in their own potential and don't bother working for what they want. In our class we research opportunities and build action plans so that they can take on their dreams. Approximately 90% of my students are Native American. 100% of them qualify for free and reduced lunch.

My Project

Students will learn that although education can be used in just and unjust ways, they can use their own education to empower themselves and become agents of change. We will read Beverley Tatum's "Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?" to learn that it is okay to talk about race and the way it affects our lives. Students will learn academic language and how to use it to share their own personal experiences. This project will build communication and self-advocacy skills. Using the students' abilities to articulate a sense of self, we will find colleges and universities suited for them. We will use Loren Pope's "40 Colleges That Change Lives" to explore the multitude of colleges and universities available. Students will learn that they have choice and that they can find a school that fits their needs.

Many of our students struggle to find their place within academic institutions.

Learning to express who they are and where they are coming from in an academic way will allow them to use their voice more easily at college. Our students need to be heard.
