I teach fifth grade at Hunley Park Elementary School in North Charleston, South Carolina. My classroom would benefit greatly from a desktop computer. Right now, I have 18 students and only two computers in my room. My students currently use literacy centers, where we work on developing reading and writing skills. Most of this work consists of seatwork and small group work. We would love to be able to incorporate a computer center as one of the components of our literacy centers. If we had more computers in our classroom, we would be able to use many of the different computer programs to build on our basic skills. By having a computer center, students will be able to work at a pace that is appropriate to their work ability. With the two computers we have now, my students are only able to use the computers about a half an hour a week. By having another computer in the classroom, computer time will increase greatly. Students will be able to do more educational projects like create and edit their writing, conduct research projects, connect the Science and Social Studies curriculum to current events, and ?explore? the world through different technological web sites hosted by Charleston County School District. These are just a few of the reasons why my fifth grade class would thoroughly enjoy a desktop computer for our classroom.
