I am a 3rd Grade teacher at a school where a portion of our students receives free or reduced-price lunches. We also have a low-income population and a high number of English learning students. I want to introduce a flexible learning environment to my students where they are able to collaborate with their classmates and learn in a new environment other than the traditional desk setting. I believe as students are able to move around and experience learning in new settings they retain more information. I am in hopes to get and keep my students excited about their learning process.
I believe that students learn best when they can be in their natural elements. Children are meant to be wiggly and full of energy so giving them a seating option which allows them to embrace these types of behaviors I feel is best. We too often try to contain students to desks and chairs and then get frustrated when they won’t stay in their seat. I feel it is time for teachers to start changing the environments of their classrooms to embrace the new 21st-century learner and flexible seating is a fantastic way to begin this new journey. These seating options will help get my students on the right path!
