I teach 8th-grade math and science at a STEM middle school in CA. We are a Title I school where 92% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. These students all live in a low-income, high poverty neighborhood. Student demographics at our school are diverse, with a makeup of 60% Hispanic, 30% African American, and 10% other races. There are also a number of English Language Learners who benefit from hands-on and technology-based learning.
Because my students have grown up dealing with many difficulties at home, we try to create a safe environment at school where students can thrive and learn using technology as a tool whenever possible.
I have requested a color printer for my classroom in order to bring life to the classroom and our entire school. This is something that can be used for instruction when certain lessons or assignments can be enhanced by having documents or pictures in color.
In addition, our entire school will benefit from this printer because as the student council advisor, I will be able to create posters and flyers for the school.
Currently, we have to send color printing out to service and it has to be approved by the district, which takes a lot of time. Many things are not approved for this as well. Having a printer in the classroom would be an excellent instructional tool to add to the educational experience of all students at our school.
