I teach Global Studies in a high needs urban district. Global Studies is a two year course with a state exam at the end, students must pass the course to graduate. Students struggle with the course and the exam because of reading comprehension and the content does not seem relevant to their lives.
Many students are not familiar with the world beyond the school and their neighborhood. They think everyone has an opportunity to go to school and that only adults or leaders can effect change, I want to use the service project to motivate them and connect to the content of the Global Studies curriculum to make it relevant to their lives.
Three Cups of Tea offers students an opportunity to read about a different part of the world and the difficulties other students face. Reading and listening to the book as a class will improve my students reading skills without having to drill the textbook and give them an opportunity to improve the lives of other students. We will collect pennies throughout the school year to raise funds for a school in Afghanistan or Pakistan to show that even a small effort can have a huge impact.
You will empower my students to make a difference in the world and give them a lasting lesson in creating world peace and hope.
