My students need gardening tools, gloves, and supplies for our new school garden. We want to analyze our soil and help our veggies to grow.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our city is the winter vegetable capital of the world! My students are the farmers of the future! We are very fortunate to have received a grant to start a garden at our school. My students need the tools to study the science of agriculture and to watch our own healthy vegetables grow!
I teach science to one class each of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who are in a program for students who meet or exceed the academic standards in all areas.
My students are inquisitive and motivated learners. They love science and enjoy hands-on investigations. They are great math students, too. They enjoy engineering in my class. They are smart and creative.
Our school is a Title One school / district in a border town. We have many students who speak English as a second language. We have motivated teachers who work very hard to find and implement the best strategies to help our students to learn. I am very proud to have worked at this school my entire teaching career (21 years and counting).
My Project
The garden will be our largest and longest hands-on STEM investigation we have done in science! My students will be able to use gardening gloves and tools to plant, care for, and harvest our own vegetables. They will learn more about the life cycle of plants as we watch them go from seeds to seedlings to mature plants. They will monitor and measure the germination of seeds and growth of seedlings. They will compare and contrast seeds and plants of different types.
I will use the requested soil analysis technology to show and discuss the conditions and health of the soil with my students. We will learn about how the different conditions of the soil affect plant growth and health.
My students need gardening tools and supplies for our new school garden.
Agriculture is the basis of the economy in our area.
The use of these tools to learn more about agriculture will help my students to understand the science behind the economy of our community. This can help them to connect to what they see all around them: fields of crops grown year-round. It may motivate them to study botany or agriculture in the future, and help them to contribute or improve our economy.
For now, my students will benefit from growing and eating fresh, healthy vegetables!
