I need to take a professional development course to assist me in finding new ways to fit guided reading into my literacy block and make the best use of my time during that instruction period.
My students are energetic, curious, and eager kindergarteners. I am always looking for ways to keep them actively engaged in meaningful learning. Though I have to do my part to provide these diverse learners with over-the-top instruction I want to be able to provide them with materials that will help them soar.
Our K-8 large, urban school services high poverty students from diverse backgrounds.
Our students are faced with many hardships, and school is the place where they are fed, loved, protected, and made to feel safe. My students learn in many different ways. Most of them, including special needs students and English language learners, depend on visuals to understand what they are being taught. Despite hardships, they work hard daily to achieve success in all subject areas.
My Project
I am seeking a professional development course to help ease guided reading instruction during our literacy block. This course will help me find ways to make guided reading lessons more exciting as well as strengthen my knowledge so I can better teach my small groups.
Guided reading is a way in which teachers can guide their students throughout the entire reading process, in a targeted and personalized manner.
I'm hoping to open up my young learner's eyes into the many strategies that skilled readers use that are based on areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Through this course, I will gain knowledge on how to better use collect data and use it to determine a student's appropriate reading level. I most look forward to understanding how to better determine the reading level of books, how to incorporate writing into my guided reading groups and how to differentiate for my English Language Learners.
