Help me give my students the opportunity to learn about how girls are treated differently in another culture and how lucky they are to get a free education in America.
My students come from varying ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. Students come to our school to get an IB education, which includes a global access to learning. Despite their background and initial ignorance of other cultures, my students actually enjoy learning about people from other cultures and their experiences. Through literature, my students have become true IB learners and have open their minds to learning about other cultures as well as finding similarities with their own culture in order to understand and appreciate all cultures in general. Because of this, my students are accepting of others and care about respecting others.
My Project
American students often take their free education for granted and are clueless about how children, specifically girls, are not allowed to get an education in other parts of the world. My students will learn about Malala's story and be able to identify the IB traits we teach everyday in class. Malala's story shows readers how she was not only a knowledgeable, caring thinker but a risk-taker who made sure she would not be silenced despite the serious danger she was in for wanting an education.
Once students read this book, they will not only be asked to analyze the Malala's character, but they will be able to tie their learning into the human and children's rights laws they will have learned in a previous unit, which will hopefully give those who are indifferent to their education a purpose and desire to learn.
We will have them create PSA's for their peers that will encourage them to want to learn and/or improve upon their learning, so as to create a positive learning environment in our school. Middle school students have so much going on that they need encouragement and inspiration to keep working hard and to prepare for high school. This book will help guide their reflections on themselves as learners, as girls and boys, and students who can make a positive difference in their school and community.
