We need a new computer that will work well with newer Mac editing and animation software. My students learn to edit in iMovie and FinalCut Express. They need to have access to the training that will come of having newer computers in our classroom that run the newer software.
My students do an animation project and two video projects each year.
They leave third grade with the capability to shoot and edit video on their own. It is a fabulous feeling to understand how that works and to create something on their own that others can watch and enjoy.
My third grade students are bright and enthusiastic. They meet my challenging project assignments with creativity and persistence. They attend a very small "gifted magnet" in a public school that is in an urban neighborhood that would be considered poor. Their parents have high expectations for their children, but funding in public schools is difficult right now and funding for "gifted" students is at a new low. My students learn to write thematic scripts, shoot and edit video, and produce a DVD. We're known for our videos, but we have two older computers in our classroom that are getting too old to use for editing.
My Project
Help our students experience a video workstation that is reliable. Our old G4 Macs have been workhorses for us but they are too old now to work well for video editing and have become more frustrating for my students every year. Help us get one new iMac that we can use for our projects this year and in the years to come.
Producing a video or an animation requires writing a well-edited script, planning how it will be shot, and rounding up artists or actors.
Students experience first hand how much it takes to complete just a few minutes of video or animation. Their understanding of television and film and how they view it is changed forever.
