Economics Here Economics There, Economics Everywhere!
My students need books that show economic contents to see how economics is connected to everything around them. This grant will provide books, blank books, and CDs necessary to teach economics to my students.
Putting on economic lenses while teaching reading strategies to my students!
My school is in a progressively growing rural community with total enrollment in Kindergarten through 5th grade of a little over 550 students.
The town’s population is approximately 66,881, with 17 elementary schools in the district. The diversity at our school comes from the socio-economic levels with approximately 45% of our students receiving free and reduced lunches. I teach in a self-contained third grade class. I have twenty-five students. There are a total of three third grade teachers at my elementary school. I teach students with a wide range of learning abilities.
My Project
My goals are for my students to understand that economics is as important as any other subject in school (or more) and that is relevant to their daily lives.
My objectives are to teach economic vocabulary in an interactive way so it comes alive to my students. I also want my students to be able to identify and discuss the meaning of the concepts. I want my students to become economical literate.
The students will define scarcity, consumers, producers, incentives, price, Law of Demand, Law of Supply. They will also explain that people cannot have everything they want, identify what they gain and what they give up when they make choices, and give examples of opportunity cost in different situations. My students need books that show economic contents to see how economics is connected to everything around them. This grant will provide the resources necessary to teach economics to my students.
The students will benefit from this activity by gaining the knowledge of economic vocabulary through literature and real life experiences.
Students will be taught to look for economics in everyday activities and be able to identify it. Students will gain the awareness of how economics is in everything we do and that every decision has a cost. Students will also become aware of how developing countries have different and similar needs and wants.
