As a 3rd grade teacher at a title one school, I have found that certain experiences are lost in order to concentrate on reading and math skills. While the students are working hard to improve on their reading, writing, and math skills, they are missing out on practical, fascinating, and interesting areas of education. I am speaking about Science and the things that can be learned from it. While I have a number of ideas that I would like to see implemented to bring an interest to science into the classroom, my current pet project is to create an Eco-aquarium. This aquarium would be designed to show how all things in nature interact with one another and help the students explore the cycle of life and the food chain. The aquarium would be set up with a small fountain going from one end to the other, It would start at the top of a slope of rocks and soil(mountain), follow a set path(stream, river), and end in a graveled, sandy water area(beach). The areas would also contain various vegetation and wildlife that feed off of and interact with one another. This would include: mealworms, redworms, frogs, fish, snails, spiders, grass, flowers, fruit and leaves. The students would then be able to see how all things work together to create a stable environment and why even the smallest of creatures and the seemingly insignificant of things are important in nature. This project would be ongoing, and not only benefit the students in class now, but all the future third grade classes. It should also spark enough of an interest to have the students return in the future to check on the aquarium, and the changes that may have occured.
