Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your experiences in elementary school? From read alouds to writing journals, math facts to field trips, second grade is an important milestone for children across the nation. It's part of the foundation of a love of learning for decades to come.
My students are seven and eight years old and are excited about learning!
All students may receive a free breakfast and lunch at our school. For many, English is their second language. It is so important to provide them with experiences and opportunities that will enable them to learn, while respecting their different backgrounds and learning styles.
My Project
Reduce, reuse, and recycle! Every day is Earth Day! I’m the proud sponsor of our school’s new ECO Club, and students in Kindergarten through 5th grade are excited to learn more about their Earth and ways to protect it!
Watching composting in action and planting their own gardens will enable my students to learn about real-world issues faced by horticultural and environmental scientists.
We’ve already started reducing plastic waste by collecting bottle caps to create a school mural and literacy and math kits, but the students want to do more!
What child isn’t intrigued by wiggling worms? Students will discover the heavy-duty action of these decomposers with the Worm Composter Kit. Recycling isn’t just about the things we put in recycling bins!
What should we plant in our garden? What will grow best? If we had no access to a grocery store, what would we want to plant? These are just some of the questions I will ask the students to think about when contemplating what to plant in the 5 large containers that are part of the Garden Pack.
The books I chose are about scientists and solutions, including a way to reuse plastic bags by crocheting! Two copies of each book make buddy reading easier as my 4th and 5th grade ECO Ambassadors help their younger club mates.
Help my students develop skills they can apply at home and in future careers. Help my students blossom with the books, composting and garden kits!
