Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I work in an urban elementary school with students in grades kindergarten through fifth. Approximately 99 percent of our children are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Parents face numerous challenges just to meet basic needs such as providing meals when students are not in school. A large number of students participate in the Backpack Weekend program which provides meals for those who may not eat until they return on Monday.

In addition to benefiting from programs that meet nutritional needs, our students have an opportunity to receive warm coats, shoes and supplies from various organizations.

My Project

I have selected titles and resources to enhance lessons on award winning books and specific authors. The students look forward to reading stories by Lois Lowry, Roald Dahl, and Madeline L'Engle every year. Because they are favorites extra copies are always needed. Patriotic celebrations such as Constitution Day are also favorite times of the year. I selected several titles to add value to those lessons.

I have a strong desire to support our students with special needs.

I believe the material selected will provide the strategies to accomplish this goal. Every effort is made to understand our unique population of students who suffer from social anxiety or who have autism. I hope the books will assist with this endeavor.
