Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 730+ students live and study in the Hermosa neighborhood, whose Spanish translation is "beautiful." It's a working-class neighborhood on the northwest side of our city. I'm lucky enough to be their librarian, meaning I know each and every student in our school.
Our zip code has been hit very hard by the coronavirus pandemic so I'm incredibly worried about my students and their families.
My students often have very little in terms of possessions, but they deserve so much.
My Project
As COVID-19 has grown out of control around our country, it's clear that remote learning is the choice for the time being. CPS has proposed bringing students and staff back into buildings in late January/early February. It's hard to say for sure if we'll be back by then because in-person learning has been pushed back multiple times now.
With schools being closed since March, my students have been unable to check out books for eight months and counting; eBooks are the safest way to bring books to my students' hands.
I'm requesting about 90 additional eBooks to add to our virtual library collection. Through generous donors and CPS, I have been able to acquire several hundred new eBooks for students to read. These books are available 24 hours a day! My students were thrilled to have access to the newest Dog Man, Baby Sitters Club, Goosebumps, Bad Guys books! We're still going strong reading them and are hoping to acquire more awesome eBooks to add to our collection.
In this list, I'm requesting a number of picture books that I can use as read alouds and to offer my students to read independently as well. They'll love graphic novels like "Grumpy Unicorn", "Mega Robo Bros" and "Pashmina." My youngest readers will love to read more new books aloud with me during library class. I'm requesting some great picture books, like "Of Thee I Sing: a Letter to My Daughters" by President Obama, "Our Friend Hedgehog" and "Fred's Big Feelings: the Life and Legacy of Mister Rogers."
My student and I appreciate your support! Stay safe and read lots!
