Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at my school are inquisitive, compassionate, and creative. My students love to read and are always looking for a new adventure in a book.
My students are book-loving, avid readers and enthusiastic learners.
There is a buzz about books and an excitement for reading and learning throughout our school. I am the librarian at a K-8 elementary school in an impoverished urban area that has been especially hard-hit by COVID-19. Our school library is an essential resource for my students and a central access point to high-quality books.
My Project
This project will add over 100 eBooks to our virtual library collection and will provide students greater access to books safely. Our students have been learning remotely since March and plans for returning to school this winter are somewhat uncertain as the pandemic continues. We have a robust school library collection, but it is not safe for students or staff to access and check out these books as cases of COVID-19 continue to rise. Unfortunately the Little Village neighborhood where our school is located has been hit especially hard by COVID-19.
Now more than ever it is essential to provide my students with the resources they need to continue to succeed in their education.
The eBooks included on this list were selected based on my students’ interests, popular authors, favorite series, and student book requests. Many of these eBooks have been included on the end of the year best book lists and many will likely be award-winners. The eBooks added with this project will offer my students a greater selection of eBooks to read safely from their homes as remote learning continues during this global pandemic.
Just like remote learning, eBooks are also a change for my students. Students have learned to use their Chicago Public Library eCard in addition to accessing and reading ebooks from our district and school virtual library collections during our library virtual classes. Since print books had previously been the priority due to technology access, I am continuing to build and curate a captivating eBook collection. My students are enthusiastic readers and are excited to start reading these new eBooks!
Thank you for supporting my students and our school library.
