My school district is the 10th largest school district in the state of Pennsylvania. Due to economic status, all students receive free breakfast and lunch. In the last four years, five elementary and two high schools have closed.
Many of our students come from homes that are below the poverty rate.
Our classrooms lack basic supplies that are critical to the learning environment. Our students struggle with basic reading strategies and are below grade level. The provided reading materials are outdated, above their level, and black and white copies stapled together.
We are trying to prepare our young for the growing world around us. We have limited to zero access to computers and/or technology. We still use tape recorders to listen to stories! Our neighboring school districts have one computer for most students. My students need 3 Kindles to help prepare them for the world. Our individual school is trying to build a media center in our library. Hopefully, we can add a few tablets each year to increase exposure. We know this is the direction the world is going and little by little we need to help prepare them for it. This is just one way we can provide them a head start to the expectations of employers and higher educational institutions.
