Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work with students with Learning disabilities who learn along with non-disabled peers in the general education class settings.
In every case, they read at least one grade level below their friends and have not learned to enjoy books because they struggle with printed material in front of them.
They do not gravitate to activities that are hard and those that show them how differently they understand things in school. Excitement does not come easily because they have learned over time that most activities in school are hard work for them.
My Project
Students with reading deficits do not gravitate to books because they equate them with work; each word is a chore to figure out. Most frequently, they are not attracted to reading at all.
Wordless books or ones that have greater reliance on pictures help children to make the connection between wonder and reading.
Books that rely on pictures challenge a child to talk out their predictions and notice details before they even attack a word. Talking is less stressful than decoding and that's the first step.
An attractive and fun book corner that shows them the joy of books can lead to a greater love of reading.
