My students need engaging emergent readers including My Weird School, Amelia Bedelia, The Berenstain Bears, Marley, Pinkalicious and the Cupcake Calamity, and Elephant & Piggy.
The students at this school, a Title I school in an urban area, come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a magnet elementary school with a new theme of play and ingenuity, and with that comes an increase in the number of ways in which students are able to explore, create and take risks in their learning.
The mission of the library is to support the academic growth of all students, develop and nurture an interest in books, and foster a life-long love of reading for enjoyment.
The vision is to create an environment where academics, play, creativity, and ingenuity merge.
My Project
The Easy Reader section of the school library has recently been revitalized to facilitate student access. New signage and a new location within the picture book section of the Media Center have made this area one of the most frequently utilized sections of the school library. Where in previous years this area was rarely browsed, it is now the area students select from regularly to find "just right" books as they develop as readers. The collection is in need of titles which support the mission and vision of the library.
After weeding titles that were significantly dated and unappealing to readers, it became clear which titles were in high demand.
To meet this need, additional titles are needed of some of the most popular series, as well as new titles which will provide emergent and developing readers with a wider selection of titles from which to borrow. I'm requesting books from a variety of series including My Weird School, Amelia Bedelia, The Berenstain Bears, Marley, Pinkalicious and the Cupcake Calamity, and Elephant & Piggy.
For students in younger grades just learning to read, the emergent readers provide texts that allow for students to apply decoding skills and develop into more proficient readers. Due to the popularity of this section, and the limited number of books, students can sometimes have a difficult time finding their favorites to check out. The books in this project will allow more students access to titles which are engaging and support emergent literacy skills.
