Reading is a challenging new concept for kindergarten kids. It is especially frustrating if the book is not the right level for the child! Having a variety of "just right" books for these kids will help reading become even more fun!
At my school, it is likely that a large number of my kiddos haven't been read to at home.
They might not get a bedtime story read by mom or dad. This lack of exposure to print at an early age can be devastating when those children are trying to learn to read. In my kindergarten class, that is a struggle we daily work to overcome.
My Project
If my classroom gets a set of easy reader books, the kids will have a huge variety of books to choose from that they can actually read themselves! Right now, I check out easy reader books from our school library, so most kids only get one book at a time. If we had a set in my classroom, they could find so many books that they can actually READ. The more successful they feel while reading, the more likely they are to love reading!
