We are blessed to have a fantastic and kind student body here at our school. We have students in ages ranging from four to ten years old in the Child Development Program through fourth grade, all of whom are served in the Special Area Classes
The students at our school come from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds and we strive to create a classroom environment that promotes understanding and kindness towards each other.
We also have special needs students that attend Special Area Classes (PE, Music, Art, Library, Computer Lab). They come to our classes with regular education students to observe and interact with them.
All students come together when we have our special area or exploratory classes. Not only do they need to learn the social skills of sharing materials (and personal space), but also how to organize materials and take care of them.
They need to learn responsibility, independence and problem solving.
The special area classes teach these skills as well as their unique subject matter. We have many students in a small space, so the students need to learn how to keep their materials ready and organized for themselves and the students who come after them. I hope to teach the students that treating the school supplies with respect is a form of kindness; they are keeping everything nice and tidy for those who come to specials after them.
We are using color coded art materials and organizers to help students learn how to take care of their school supplies and to be able to share materials safe and respectfully.
