Hello! I am a kindergarten teacher in a wonderful school in Durham, North Carolina. Many of my students come from underprivileged homes, and are some of the sweetest and most appreciative students you will ever find!
Some of the most important concepts kindergarteners learn are colors, shapes, and numbers. Because young children enjoy being read to immensely, one of the most effective ways to teach these concepts is through books. Lakeshore Learning has created a collection of books for each of these areas.
The Number Books are a collection of twenty books that each deal with one number. These books are wonderful for teaching counting, building number recognition, and have wonderful illustrations. Each page offers pictures of objects like teddy bears, jelly beans, buttons, oranges, balloons, blocks, fish, and many more for kids to count. It is a great series!
The Colors and Shapes books offer wonderful illustrations that relate to each color or shape. The ten color books cover the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, white, brown, and black. Each book is devoted to one color and only contains pictures of that color in the book. The five shape books, circle, rectangle, square, triangle, and oval, take everyday objects and relate them to each shape. For example, the circle book contains pictures of clocks, dart boards, glasses, and sports balls!
All three series offer wonderful and creative ways to teach important concepts through reading. Besides offering students easy ways to learn the numbers, colors, and shapes, the books are also easy enough that they can read them. They would make a wonderful addition to our mathematics and reading library.
