Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I serve special education students at a school where a major oil refinery is located just a few miles away. The students come from all over the district to join this primarily Dual Immersion school where we work incredibly hard to provide a quality education. I work with the special needs students who struggle in the general education classroom. My students focus better and work harder if they are engaged during lessons.
All students perform more effectively if they are engaged and given materials that allow for kinesthetic learning which includes using technology.
They deserve the same quality education as a higher income school. Many of my students come to school hungry and without proper clothing.
They are inquisitive, intelligent, and want to be successful. They need someone to believe in them, have empathy for their needs, and make a connection with them so they build their confidence and self-esteem. They need to experience curriculum through visual, tactile and kinesthetic modalities.
My Project
We have received a book cart and now we need the book bins so we can fill them with our leveled books. I work with struggling students who need motivation. If books are available with easy access, this supports student motivation and allows them to choose the book they want to read.
Engaging students with books they read gives them confidence to understand what they have read and share in discussion.
The best classroom environment for struggling readers is one where they can think and talk aloud with their classmates and the teacher about their ideas and questions. Students need to read a certain number of leveled, independent books and set a goal of reading. This helps to improve their fluency and comprehension. Having books available for students is the first step in engaging them and giving them an opportunity to build their confidence.
