Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth grade students reside in East Harlem, which is not far from Museum Mile in Manhattan. However, few ever venture into any of the museums housed there. I try to change this when my students come to my class. In the past I've taken my classes to the Jewish Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which offer low-cost or free trips to New York City school groups. However, a trip to the Guggenheim Museum, which I'd love to take them to, is expensive, so I've never been able to bring my class there. But I hope you can change that since I'd love for my students to experience this architectural jewel, which resides less than a mile south of my school, on Museum Mile.
All of the educator-led tours at the Guggenheim Museum include hands-on activities, which most art museums do not offer to kids. After a tour of the collection, the children will engage in a hands-on project related to the art they'd just seen.
Therefore, I would like to take my students to the Guggenheim's Permanent Collection, which will allow them to survey Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early Modern masterpieces. During the tour students will discuss works by Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Vasily Kandinsky, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. At the end of the tour, students will have the opportunity to create their own artwork based on the works they have experienced in the galleries.
Due to the financial hardships of my students and their families, visiting the Guggenheim Museum on a Sunday afternoon is just not possible. By funding this proposal, you will allow my students to visit one of the grandest art collections in the world and furnish them with the opportunity to become inspired by some of the greatest artists' works of our time.
Thank you, in advance, for your consideration.
