Our school community is comprised of diverse learners from a plethora of cultural backgrounds. There are at least 30 different languages spoken by families at this school. The school is located in a high poverty area, and the majority of students receive a free or reduced fee lunch. Our school strives to positively support our student learners.
Fifth graders in my class will be learning about their changing bodies during puberty education week.
Students in my class come from families struggling with high rents and high costs of living. They may feel uncomfortable letting their parents know about their hygiene needs.
My Project
When students feel that they are cared for, they are more comfortable and able to focus on academic tasks. Teaching fifth graders is a wonderful and exciting time. However, their bodies are changing and often they are unsure about what is happening. By providing some simple care products like deodorant, soap, and sanitary napkins, students will feel like taking on the new responsibility of their personal hygiene.
Along with personal hygiene needs, a student's social emotional needs will be met by creating a peace corner with some calming fidgets.
Taking care of these needs will open avenues for learning that will allow students to think more deeply and retain more learning.
