Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege to teach at a Title I school in South Texas where 100% of the students enjoy free breakfast and lunch. We are in our second year as a renovated STEM school, preparing our students for careers of the future. My passion is to guide them in mastering the 4cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity) and provide opportunities to explore, discover and showcase their talents.
My math students learn by working in groups to maximize collaboration and communication in the classroom.
These soft skills are what top employers are looking for. I want to give every opportunity to my students to be the most qualified and prepared for any challenge they may face.
My Project
Students think critically and creatively when they are able to stand and move. Standing desks have been scientifically proven to improve health and assist in keeping blood-flow, which in turn helps the thinking process.
My class consists of conversations between student groups where scholars discuss mathematics that might sound like "What steps did you take" or "What's another way to work this out?"
Teaching in this century is no longer with "the sage on the stage" where the teacher knows all. Instead, great pedagogy is about transforming a classroom into a collaboration room and facilitating student-centered learning experiences. This can be done with traditional classroom furniture, however the antique desk designs hinder more than help the objectives of communication and collaboration.
The space in which my students work makes a dramatic difference in their focus. With the right furniture and design elements, I can provide an inspiring atmosphere of collaboration.
