I teach a group of twenty-six first grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime rate in the nation. All the students at my school site receive free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation in the United States. At least 15% of my students are newcomers to the country. School is one of the only places at which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.
Living and attending school in a highly impoverished, urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.
Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.
I spend about half of the day working with small groups at a horseshoe shaped table sitting in a first-grade chair. This first-grade chair is clearly not made for adults, and after some time, I must get up to stretch my body. This is why I am requesting a chair that is adult sized. This chair will allow me to sit comfortably while I teach these small groups of students without having to take a stretch break.
Students learn better when working in small groups and having a comfortable chair to sit in while teaching them will help improve their learning.
Additionally, I am requesting a set of knives and a peeler. We need these to cut or peel any fruit or vegetables that are part of our nutrition lessons.
