Help me give my students a classroom easel to use for big books, art, story maps, magnetic math manipulatives, and most importantly, pictures and visuals for SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Oberservation Protocol) ESL students!
This my 30th year of teaching and I have been given the gift of teaching a SIOP class. SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) an instructional model that has been data researched and scientifically proven to meet the needs of English learners. Most of my scholars are bilingual. Those of us who aren't, are learning Spanish from those that are - they love teaching their teacher! Our school is a Title I school with 60% of scholars that receive free and reduced lunch. Our school is known for having many community volunteers throughout the year. We have received media recognition for our "100 Men the First 10 Days of School." Our parents are gracious, involved and supportive, but are limited because of the language barrier. So our Administration assures scholars twice the support throughout the school day with volunteers, especially men volunteers to fill the gap of absent fathers.
Our scholars are artistic and creative.
They are kinesthetic learners; therefore, they learn by moving and doing. Sitting still at a desk all day long is unacceptable. They need an easel to use magnetic alphabet letters and math magnetic manipulatives for hands on learning.
My Project
It is imperative to have an easel to explore, model and demonstrate my lessons, especially for my SIOP class to engage scholars in learning English, reading, writing and math. An easel would be utilized throughout the day to read big books on, post pictures of vocabulary words and use as an interactive whiteboard. The easel would be used during whole group and small group instruction. Anchor charts and book bins would be stored and displayed for scholars on the easel. The easel provides anchor chart storage so that scholars would be able to to locate anchor charts previously made and use as a resource throughout the year when needed on an individual basis. The easel would also be used by scholars to make words with magnetic alphabet letters and use magnetic math manipulatives to reinforce all math standards. Easels make learning FUN!
