This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a very diverse population where about thirty percent of the student body is African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic. All students are bused to school. All the students are eligible for free lunch. I have been a science teacher for over twenty years. I came to our school to teach STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering Art, and Math), and finally, I teach beyond the school district curriculum.
My Project
Many students have endured some degree of isolation and powerlessness during the extended time of virtual learning / online classes. As we slowly put the pandemic disruptions behind us, our school has returned to face-to-face learning and we are intentionally moving to reinvigorate student learning with collaborative and hands-on educational practices. I want to restore students' empowerment through the joy of creating; helping them to see applications of their thinking and learning put into real-world action.
The creative process of turning 'ideas' into real projects empowers students who have felt like trapped passengers on a solemn pandemic bus ride; turning ideas into projects helps students practice the role of being active agents in changing the world rather than passive observers.
Students will use these tools for projects ranging from prototyping inventions to building sustainability structures, to designing alternative energy experiments, to creating interactive robots.
All of our projects serve the bigger picture of students learning stages project management, carrying ideas from the abstract into reality and evaluate their real-world results.
It is right to say these tools will serve the community through the projects completed. But the bigger picture is that these tools will help individual students to rediscover their creativity while helping a generation of students reclaim their roles as active shapers of the world. They will experience the frustration, joy, and pride of problem-solving and collaboration skills all while preparing themselves for the active ownership role their generation must inherit.
